Man In The Mirror

'MANY people keep saying that the man in the mirror is your competition, but he is not only that; he is also your guide, one that shows your physical progress and which parts need more work and attention than the rest...'

Stephen packs a punch

A long overdue post, but here it goes...

Story & Photos By GG PRESENTS

MEET STEPHEN ONN JENGGIENG, a boxer who remains grounded in reaching his goals. He is among the new crop of boxers in Malaysia, although he severely lacks the support from the boxing authorities of his homeland Sarawak.
Nevertheless, this hunk — who will turn 28 this Aug 21 — perseveres.
Stephen — who was born in Balingian, Mukah Division of Sarawak — won the Malaysian Golden Gloves in 2015, lifted the Sabah's Mayor Cup in 2016 and should have made it to the Malaysia Cup qualifiers that year, but due to a certain misunderstanding between him and the Sarawak boxing association, his dream of representing Malaysia was cut short.
Still, the boxer believes that the setback was what it was — a setback.
In an interview with warriorsdofborneo.blogspot.com, Stephen said: "I do this hoping to change the boxing scene in Sarawak. I want to make people interested again in boxing, and be part of the new generations of boxers. The last (time) we, Malaysians, saw a boxing great was in the 90s, when Sarawakian soldier Sapok Biki brought fame to Malaysia after he won gold in the 1998 Commonwealth Games. We have to start moving forward and must not look back in building boxing in Malaysia."

"For me, I don't give up easily. At times, when somebody tells me that I cannot do it, that’s when I work really hard to prove them wrong. Most of the time, however, I just strive to improve myself."

"I am a martial arts enthusiasts. I love all martial arts — growing up, I was watching movies starring Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan."

"There is this quote (that) I really like..it’s from (the movie) Rocky — one that I live by: "The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place. (And) It will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life, but it ain’t about how hard you hit — it’s about how hard you can take it and keep moving forward."
I
"I don’t look at winning championships as my ultimate goal. I want to be remembered like the legends like Sapok Biki — I wanna be like him, to be as good as him; being able to inspire the kids. To me, this would mean much more than just winning the title belts."

"We all have our own story on how we started; on how we never give up doing what we do; on proving that we are better than what others think of us." — STEPHEN ONN JENGGIENG
